5 Layer Structure — Strategic Organization of Lab Activities

Lab activities are designed in five layers

Suzuki Lab's activities consist of five "venues," each with a different role.

Lab Forum — the venue for refining value (Value Refinement Space)
Team Meeting — the venue for decisions (Tactical Decision Space)
Student Interaction — the training ground for autonomy (Autonomy Training Space)
Individual Meeting — the venue for aligning your axis (Identity Alignment Space)
Individual Work — the only place research moves (The Only Place Research Moves)

Each has a different role. Do not mix them — that is the only rule of this chapter.

Four meetings, four roles

💡 ① Lab Forum
Purpose: the venue for the whole lab's input and output. Install the research OS, and sharpen work before it goes outside. The only venue that crosses teams — and, at times, labs.
What happens here
1. Lecture (install) — a lecture from faculty. Turn the ways of thinking, tools, and techniques of research into the lab's common language. The content stays on the education portal as Lectures
2. Presentation rehearsal (output) — before conferences and reviews, with both teams together. The audience writes a Presentation Peer Review. Eyes from outside the team check whether it "gets across"
3. Joint seminar (output and input) — a joint seminar with Komiya Lab. Encounter perspectives from outside the lab, and explain your research in outside words
What does not happen here: tactical decisions (Team Meeting) ／ manuscript details (Individual Meeting, Team Meeting) ／ sparring on Framing (done in the Next Judge at Team Meeting)
🎯 ② Team Meeting — the venue for decisions that move research forward
Paper Card → decision → next action.
🤝 ③ Student-only interaction — training in autonomy
Technical consultation, verbalization training, pre-review.
🧭 ④ Individual Meeting — checking your research axis
Checking the direction of growth, career design. Not used for technical decisions or detailed manuscript fixes.

Research does not move in meetings. It moves in individual work

Do not forget the fifth layer. However many meetings you hold, research itself does not move. Meeting is for alignment. Work is for progress.

Always be aware of what a venue is for. Do not mix the purposes of venues — that is the operating rule of the 5-layer structure.
