Safety — Accidents can be prevented. When one is not, reporting is the first move

Lab safety is decided not by the number of rules, but by everyone being able to say "what is dangerous."

How to think about safety

Prediction and reporting

Safety management has the same structure as inquiry

Safety management has the same structure as the inquiry of Lab OS Chapter 02. Predict what could happen (hypothesis), compare it with what happened (observation), and update the rules (belief). An accident that was not predicted is a "near miss," and reporting it is the only way to update the rules. We report not to blame, but to prevent the next one.

Act 2

Before the experiment

Approval, two or more people, preparation

Before starting an experiment

To ensure safety, always obtain your supervisor's approval before an experiment
Experiments are carried out by two or more people. Do not operate equipment alone
Take the university's safety training (★ names of required courses, timing) before starting experiments
In the experimental plan, write one line each for the anticipated hazards (high temperature, high pressure, chemicals, electricity, heavy objects) and the countermeasures

During the experiment

Equipment, chemicals, electricity, high temperature

Rules in the laboratory

No eating or drinking in the laboratory
Record the amounts of reagents and consumables used
Do not repair broken equipment on your own; report it
★ Precautions for each piece of equipment (pressure vessels, furnaces, lasers, etc. — whatever the lab has)
★ Rules for storing and disposing of chemicals (location of SDS, separation of waste liquids)
★ Standards for wearing protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves, lab coat)

When an accident or breakdown occurs

The reporting procedure

Ensure people's safety

If there is an injury, first aid and emergency services first (★ on-campus contacts)

Stop the equipment

If you do not know how to stop it, do not touch it; just cut the power

Contact your supervisor

Share at Team Meeting and update the rules

Act 5

Information and health safety

Backups, personal data, mind and body

Data, mind, and body are also subjects of safety

Back up data at least once a week (Lab Tools "Lab Infrastructure")
Store data containing personal information (interviews, questionnaires) according to the conditions of the ethics review. Team Society should take particular care
Treat physical and mental ill-health as part of research. Share it at the Individual Meeting. On-campus counseling: ★

Checklist
